Step-Up (Barbell)
Also called Step Ups (Barbell), Barbell Step Ups, BB Step-Up
How to do it
Rest a barbell securely across the upper back and face a stable box with one whole foot planted on top. Drive through the elevated foot to stand fully on the box without pushing excessively from the trailing leg, then step down slowly with the same leg leading. Complete the set and repeat with the other leg.
Setup
Choose a box height that allows the whole lead foot to stay planted without the pelvis tucking. Secure the bar evenly across the upper back, brace the torso, square the hips, and align the lead knee over the toes.
Where you should feel it
Primarily through the lead-leg quad and glute, with the hamstrings and calf assisting while the core and hip stabilizers keep the pelvis level. The trailing foot should contribute minimally.
When to use it
Use for heavily loaded unilateral leg strength after mastering bodyweight and dumbbell step-ups. Program controlled sets of 5-10 reps per side with a stable platform and safe bar setup.
