Close-Grip Bench Press (Cable)

How to do it

Lie on a bench under a low cable and grip the bar or handle with hands shoulder-width apart. Press straight up keeping elbows tucked close to your sides, then lower under control until the bar nearly touches your chest.

Setup

Center a bench between low pulleys and use a two-handed bar or matched handles held around shoulder width. Pin your shoulder blades, plant your feet, stack wrists over forearms, and keep the elbows close without forcing an excessively narrow path.

Where you should feel it

Primarily through the triceps during the press and loaded return, with the chest and front delts assisting. If wrists collapse or shoulders dominate, widen the hands slightly and keep the handles over the lower chest.

When to use it

Use for triceps-focused pressing with continuous tension and an adjustable arm path. It works well after heavier presses or for moderate-load sets in the 8-15 rep range.
