Close-Grip Bench Press (Machine)

Also called Close-Grip Bench Press (Gym Machine), Smith Machine Close-Grip Bench Press

How to do it

Set the seat so the machine handles align with your lower chest and take the closest comfortable grip. Press the handles away to full extension with your elbows tucked, then return slowly until the chest and triceps are stretched. Keep your shoulders pinned to the pad.

Setup

Adjust the seat so the closest comfortable handles align with your lower chest, plant your feet, and keep your back and shoulder blades supported. Choose a grip that leaves wrists stacked and elbows close without shoulder discomfort.

Where you should feel it

Primarily through the triceps along the fixed press path, with chest and front-delt assistance. Wrist bend or shoulder pinching usually means the seat height or grip choice needs adjustment.

When to use it

Use for stable triceps-focused pressing when balance is not the goal, especially for controlled sets near fatigue. The fixed path supports simple progression in the 8-15 rep range.
