LIBRARY / OLYMPIC LIFT

Snatch (Barbell)

Also called Barbell Snatch, BB Snatch

How to do it

Pull bar explosively from floor to locked-out overhead position in one movement. The most technically demanding barbell lift. Requires significant coaching.

Setup

Bar over mid-foot with a wide hook grip — wide enough that the bar sits in the hip crease when you stand tall. Shoulders just ahead of the bar, chest up, lats set before the first pull.

Where you should feel it

Legs and hips driving the bar, then the upper back and shoulders holding the overhead catch. If you feel it mostly in the arms you are pulling early, and the bar will loop out in front.

When to use it

Programme it for explosive power and full-body coordination, early in a session while you are fresh and technically sharp. It is limited by technique long before strength — keep loads submaximal until the catch is consistent.
