Romanian Deadlift (Barbell)

Also called Romanian Deadlift, Barbell RDL, BB Romanian Deadlift

How to do it

Stand holding a barbell in front of your thighs with your knees softly bent. Brace your trunk and push your hips backward, sliding the bar close down your legs until your hamstrings limit the range, then drive your hips forward to stand tall. Keep your spine neutral and control the descent without turning it into a squat.

Setup

Start standing with the bar at the hips, overhand grip just outside the thighs. Soft knees, then push the hips back and let the bar graze the legs on the way down.

Where you should feel it

A deep stretch up the back of the thighs. Stop when the hamstrings run out of range, not when the bar reaches the floor.

When to use it

The hamstring builder. Program after your main lift in the 6-10 range; it teaches the hinge better than almost anything else.
