Calf Raise (Barbell)

Also called Barbell Calf Raise, BB Calf Raise, Standing Calf Raise (Barbell)

How to do it

Stand with a barbell secured across your upper back and the balls of both feet on a stable step. Lower your heels under control for a calf stretch, rise as high as possible onto your toes, pause briefly, then descend slowly while keeping your knees and ankles aligned.

Setup

Secure the bar across your upper back as for a squat, place the balls of both feet evenly on a stable step, and use rack uprights or a spotter setup that lets you balance safely. Keep your knees softly extended and ankles aligned.

Where you should feel it

Through both calves as the heels rise, with a controlled stretch near the Achilles at the bottom. If the ankles roll outward or you bounce from the bottom, reduce the load and shorten the range.

When to use it

Use for heavily loaded standing calf strength when you have a secure rack and stable step. It suits controlled moderate-rep sets, but balance and full ankle range matter more than adding plates.
